Stretching my lobes was a big part of my life for about 4 years. I started stretching slowly at the age of sixteen and I am currently twenty one. My lobes are at 5/8″ of an inch and I love them very much. I discovered lobe stretching when I was fourteen years old. My first love was in the process of stretching his lobes while we were dating freshman year of high school. It is one of the things that attracted me to him in the beginning and I was fascinated with it from then on. Of course I did not know much about it at fourteen and because my boyfriend was young and stupid him and his friends would do things like stretch with sharpened pencils and things of that nature. After seeing what looked like painful displays of lobe stretching at that age I was not necessarily eager to dive into stretching, but I was still utterly engaged by it.

At the age of sixteen I met my current best friend, who had her lobes stretched to about a 0 gauge, and she introduced me to BME. I didn’t even have my ears pierced at the time, but after hearing my best friend talk about stretching , who was a little more knowledgeable at the time then my freshman boyfriend had been, and looking at the pictures of lobes on BME I realized that I wanted to make this change to my body. I thought that the girls I saw with stretched lobes looked beautiful and strong…and that is what I wanted to look like…that is what I wanted to feel I looked like. So I decided to take the first step and get my ears pierced. Unfortunately I knew my parents would never approve of me stretching my lobes, and I couldn’t get across to them why I thought it was important to go to a piercing shop and have them done without revealing my real reason for wanting them done, so being desperate, I went to Claire’s and had them pierced with a gun.

Myself and my best friend prematurely tried to push a fourteen gauge CBR through my holes, but we did not succeed, so we went to a piercing shop that we knew would taper underage kids and I was hooked from there. I told myself when I first started stretching I would stop at 00 gauge. My ears stretched relatively easily up to double zero, but I didn’t rush, because I loved the process. I loved pushing my bodies limits and I felt so accomplished when I went up a size and I got to wear whatever new jewelry I had bought for that size.

I think I reached 00 gauge around the age of eighteen and I was pretty pleased with myself. I had reached my goal and I was happy about it, I thought my ears looked good and to me when I reach the next size up I feel like my lobes look fairly big, but after awhile I got used to them being 00 gauge. Around this time I got a job at a piercing shop and soon after I realized I could get free jewelry and my lobes tapered for free I began to consider taking my lobes to 7/16″. This was a big decision for me in a way. Because I had set a goal for 00 gauge and now I was there and I became dissatisfied with it…would I be happy at 7/16″ or would I just keep wanting to go bigger and bigger. I decided that 7/16″ wasn’t a huge jump from 00, they stretched fairly easily. It wasn’t long after that I made my goal 5/8″. I reached that goal at about the age of twenty. I am currently twenty one.

I have not stretched in about a year now and I miss it. Unfortunately my situation is not the same as it was when I was eighteen and over the past three years I have not had the luck of working in an establishment that does not frown upon larger lobes. Currently I am unemployed. This is my own fault, but I am still not happy about it and trying diligently to get another job. I have had a hard time, because I am twenty one with no professional references and being modified does not help in most situations. But during the time I have been unemployed I have been debating about making some more noticeable modifications to my body.

I just got my septum pierced and I feel empowered by it. Between that and reading some BME experiences, I think I have made the decision to stretch my lobes bigger. Stretching my lobes makes me happy, it makes me feel strong, and it makes me feel good about my appearance. I have been inspired to disregard what society rejects and do what makes me happy. I feel I owe BME and all the people that make it up a lot of gratitude. If it hadn’t been for BME in the first place I don’t think I would not have found out about lobe stretching when I did. Up until now I thought that I was done with body mod, I thought it was a phase that maybe I had “grown out” of, even though in the back of my mind I knew this was not true. But my job was repressing me so much and now between not having that job and using a chunk of my spare time reading some of the experiences posted here I feel that somewhat rebellious feeling rising up in me. I am not going to repress what I am in order to gain approval from people who will probably never understand or except me anyway. I am going to go and succeed in the world just like anyone else, but I am going to do it being exactly who I am, and looking the exact way that reveals my personality, and I hope that spirit in me is not squashed by society again like it has been for the last two years.

I have always wanted my anti-tragus pierced, and with my 21st birthday right around the corner, now seemed like a great time to get it. It’s my “Happy Birthday to Me” present to myself.

I went to my favorite piercing shop in town <a href=”http://peircingvox729.vox.com/”>piercing vox</a>. The in-house artist there, Michelle is so cool and helpful. She’s done two of my piercings so far, and I plan on going back to her if I decide to get anymore.

I went it, took care of all the paperwork and legal stuff and she made a copy of my license. She asked what I wanted done, and I told her. She said that it shouldn’t be a problem because I had a good shaped ear. I decided to go with my right ear. I already have a helix piercing in my left ear. I’m all about some symmetry!

We went upstairs to the piercing room. It was very clean and bright. It even had that weird/clean dentist office smell to it!!

I sat down on the chair while she cleaned off all the surfaces and got her supplies ready. She asked if I had any questions about anything. I asked if she knew about the pain of an anti-tragus piercing. Of course she said that everyone was different and that it would just depend on my threshold for pain. Well, I always thought that I was kind of a sissy, but I’ve come to find out that I actually handle pain very well. So that gave me some assurance.

She showed me what everything was, what needle she was going to use, and let me pick out what jewelry I wanted. She asked me earlier if I wanted a barbell, or a hoop. I asked her what she would recommend. She said that having a hoop would be easier to clean and that it wouldn’t swell that much <a href=”http://peircingtown.canalblog.com/”>piercing town</a>. So, needless to say, I picked out the little 16g silver hoop.

Well, by this time my heart was starting to beat faster, and my breathing was getting heavier. I had taken some Advil earlier before I went to the shop. She cleaned the area all around, and down inside my ear. She placed a little dot on my ear and asked if I wanted it there or if I wanted to move it. She even held the hoop up to the area so I could get an idea of what it would look like once it was in there.

She told me to take a deep breathe in and to release slowly. I took in a huge breathe, and let it all release. I didn’t really hear any noise at all, I just felt alot of heavy pressure being put on my ear, and then a lot of heat. It really didn’t hurt as much as I thought it would. It was a bit uncomfortable, but it wasn’t unbearable.

The part that probably hurt the most was when she put the jewelry in, because she had to close the hoop and was tugging on it and trying to be as quick as possible without being too clumsy about it <a href=”http://www.bloglines.com/blog/piercingcool”>piercing cool</a>. I felt some of my blood start to dribble down inside my ear! It felt so weird!! She stopped it and cleaned it up before it got far enough down inside my ear though.

She cleaned the area again, and cleaned up some dried blood on my ear. After she got everything cleaned, she gave me the mirror again and let me see my new piercing. It looked so good!! I couldn’t get over how nice it looked. It wasn’t puffy or red at all. Of course she told me about the aftercare and to take a couple of ibuprofens to help with swelling and tenderness and gave me some seasalt.

It’s about a day old now, and I still am in love with it!! I clean it with a seasalt mixture in the morning before I go to work, and then I scrub it really good with Dial soap at night in the shower. It really didn’t hurt last night when I went to sleep either. I even rolled over on my side and it didn’t hurt.

Sometimes it kinda hurts when I smile, or when I eat. I take a few ibuprofen to help with the pain and swelling. I also try and keep my hair pulled back on that side.

I also take a multi-vitamin to help give my body the nutrients it needs to repair itself faster. When I got my helix in my ear, I took a vitamin and it healed in no time. I also try not to drink alot of caffinated drinks, I know that can sometimes hinder the healing process. I drink water instead. It really, really helps! Even if you do have to run to the bathroom 15+ times a day! Ha ha.

All in all, it was such a thrill and a good birthday present and I love, LOVE, LOVE it!!!

Lip plates, also known as lip plugs or lip discs, are a form of body modification where gradually larger discs (usually circular, and made from clay or wood) are inserted into a pierced hole in the lower lip, thereby stretching it. The term labret (pronounced “LAY-brett”) denotes all kinds of pierced-lip ornaments, including plates and plugs piercing peircing.

In Africa, a lower lip plate is usually combined with the excision of the two lower front teeth, sometimes all four. In some cases (Sara, Lobi) a plate is also inserted into the upper lip. Other tribes, such as the Makonde piercing world, wear a plate in the upper lip only. In many older sources it is reported that the plate’s size is a sign of social or economical importance in some tribes. However, because of natural mechanical attributes of human skin, it seems that the plate’s size often just depends on the stage of stretching of the lip.

In South America, lip plates are nearly always made from light wood.

Among the Surma and Mursi people of the lower Omo River valley in Ethiopia, about 6-12 months before marriage the woman’s lip is pierced by her kinswomen, usually around the age of 15-16. [citation needed]

These days, it appears that Mursi girls of age 13 to 16 just decide for themselves whether they want to wear a lip plate or not. The initial piercing is done as an incision of the lower lip of about 2 cm length, and a simple wooden peg is inserted. After the wound has healed, which usually takes 2 or 3 weeks, the peg is replaced with a slightly bigger one. At a diameter of about 4 cm the first lip plate made of clay is inserted. Every woman crafts her plate by herself and takes pride in including some ornamentation. A final diameter of about 10 to 15 cm seems common, although sizes of up to 25 cm are reported and can be seen on recent tourist photographs[1] [2]. Many recent sources [3] claim that, for Mursi and Surma women, the size of their lip plate indicates the number of cattle paid as bride price.

In some Amazonian tribes, young men traditionally have their lips pierced when they enter the men’s house and leave the world of women [4] [5]. Lip plates there have important associations with oratory and singing, and the largest plates are worn by the greatest orators and war-chiefs, like the well-known environmental campaigner Raoni[6] of the Kayapo tribe piercing cool.

In the Pacific Northwest of North America, among the Haida, Tsimshian, and Tlingit, lip plates symbolised social maturity by indicating a girl’s eligibility to be a wife. The installation of a girl’s first plate was celebrated with a sumptuous feast

I go with the urges, and recently I had been feeling rather bored with my ears which were practically just about as full as metal as they were going to get, or as I wanted them to get and I had wanted a lip ring for quite awhile. Now though I may not be the brightest crayon in the box I did in fact do some researching about the dangers and infection, all of that jazz. So back to the part where I jab a needle through my lip.

I am a bit of a wimp, so I had to get my close friend Kris to help me (you know they’re your real friends when they don’t mind sticking random pointy objects in your lip). We got a 16 gage sewing needle, small I know an earring, some peroxide and a bag of ice and set off towards the only safe place to pierce a lip away from prying eyes: The beach. Now first let me describe to you this beach and how you get there: To get to the beach you have to walk down a small expanse of road till you get to bush, and by bush I mean it doesn’t look like there is any possible way to get there, so you duck under the thorns and dodge the tree’s till you get to a hill, an by now you can see the really tiny beach with rocks and seaweed and no sand straight ahead, getting down the hill is the problem. You have to maneuver yourself down by grabbing the rope tied to a tree and using it to balance you weight, but still, there is no avoiding getting mud on your hands and dirt down your shoes.

So wiping the grime off our hands I removed the ice pack which I had been pressing to my lip for the pleasant burning ‘feels like pins are stabbing me’ affect that would apparently numb the feeling of another needle stabbing into my lip, off of my face and discarded it. We still had some dirt on our hands and removing the needle from the jar of peroxide we got ready to mutilate my lip.

We started off both of us with our thumbs on the needle just purely trying to jab the damn thing into my lip, but that wasn’t going to happen unless I wanted to wind up with a needle in my gum. So I was forced to stick two fingers in my mouth holding my lip open while forcing the needle up from the bottom, unfortunately we should have used marker to determine where we wanted to needle because it wound up just slightly lower than I wanted but it still looked good.

Anyways, by now I could feel the steel tip of the needle poking through my lip, but the thicker part was yet to follow and the ice had basically worn off slightly leaving my lip feeling warm and vulnerable to pain. We counted to three and I took a deep breath, and we forced it through the rest of the way. My lip made a really loud popping noise that caused my eyes to open as wide as you could possibly imagine but the needle was in fact through. We grinned at each other like we had it all figured out and removed the needle before poking the earring through with some difficulty, due to the lack of an actual lip ring this was a good substitute.

Okay, now just to tell you I thought I was actually going to get away with having that earring dangling out of my mouth without my parents knowing, because at the time I was living on a tiny boat and I mean come on. So Kris gave me a hug and wished me luck before setting off back to her house which was fairly close to boat docked in the marina. I got away with the lip ring for about oh say five minutes, and you would not believe the swearing. In the end we wound up with my mom calling me trash, a fuck up, and kicking me out of the house, I with tearful eyes ran to Kris’s house and after failing climbing in through her window, showed up tearful on their doorstep, but never relinquishing my lip ring.

I wound up being forced to go home that night after Kris and I balled our eyes out and I had a shower, thinking coyly I promised my parents I would take out the lip ring tomorrow morning before I went to school, taking it out I let them think they had won, now I may sound like a royal brat right now but just to tell you: You don’t know my story or how horribly every single person in my elongated and close family hates me because they need a scapegoat for their problems. Anyways, I walked to the bus stop where Kris and I re-put the earring back through my lip, which was swelling normally by the hour. I got away with taking it out when I came home and re-poking it back through once every hour for around three weeks, and my lip probably would have been healed faster but I probably agitated it, but whatever, people always doubt our body’s immune system. My parents had cooled off at this point but yet I still didn’t have an actual lip ring, so going to school with what looked like a fish hook hanging out of my mouth was the only good alternative.

I guess one teacher from school called home about how it looked like I had a hook hanging out of my mouth and endure the ridicule of those kids at high school we all seem to hate, my parents let me go one with thinking they didn’t know for a week before confronting me with disappointed looks but saying I could keep it in and they would buy me a real lip ring. I would like to pretend after that my parents and I got a long great, I stopped being emotionally destroying by them every time I got home and there was no more harsh words but that could never happen, but I rely on my friends and constantly remind myself of how strong I am and that I won this one small victory: My lip ring.
